How to get your piece of a $9 billion dollar pie

On Black Friday, U.S. companies did more than $9 billion in online sales.

This proves two things:

  1. There’s SERIOUS money to be made in cyberspace.

  2. Shoppers like “quick and easy.” (Hey, if they wanted “time-consuming and hard,” they’d have driven their credit cards to the mall at 4 a.m.)

Black Friday's record profits also prompt a question about YOUR online presence: Is your website making you money?

In StoryBrand World, we talk about the “grunt test.” This is the idea that a caveman should be able to look at your website's home page for 5-7 seconds and then grunt the answers to three questions:

  • What does this business sell or do?

  • How does their product or service make my life better?

  • How do I get what they offer?

In other words, to sell online, your website needs to be "quick and easy" to understand.

As we wrap up 2022 (and look ahead to 2023), I recommend you give your website the “grunt test."

Find a caveman...or at least someone who knows nothing about your business. See if they can answer those three questions in five seconds.

When people visit your online “office/store,” they want “quick and easy.”

So, use clear words. Make your website simple.

If you make people WORK to understand how you can help them, you're NOT helping them!

Make their online shopping experience a pain and would-be customers will bounce away in frustration. They'll click over to your competitor's website...where buying is hassle-free.

Not just on Black Friday, but every day.

Here’s to a simple website that makes you money.
